Add a compact yet functional power switch to your Raspberry Pi with the OnOff SHIM!
SHIMs (Shove Hardware in the Middle) are a new series of small, affordable, and practical boards. Measuring just 0.8mm thick (excluding mounted components), they’re designed to solder directly onto your Pi’s GPIO pins if desired, allowing compatibility with HATs and pHATs.
Connect your micro-USB power supply to the OnOff SHIM's micro-B connector. Press the button once to power on and boot your Raspberry Pi. After installing the software (details below), you can press and hold the button for one second to safely shut down your Pi and completely cut power.
The clean shutdown software is easy to install with a one-line command. The daemon monitors BCM pin 17 for a low signal (button press) to initiate a safe shutdown. Before powering off completely, BCM pin 4 is pulled low to cut the power entirely.
To install, open a terminal and run:
curl https://get.pimoroni.com/onoffshim | bash
While the OnOff SHIM can power a Raspberry Pi 4 with a 2.5A micro-B power supply, the Pi 4's recommended power requirement is 3A. Using lower power supplies may lead to issues, especially with high-demand USB devices.
